How to Choose the Right Health Coach

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Many years ago, I was at a loss for where to start when I needed a practitioner to address various symptoms and imbalances.

There were so many different practitioners and coaches that I couldn’t figure out who would be able to help me with my specific health issues. Because of that, I ended up seeing many practitioners before realizing what I should have been looking for in the first place.

To save you the expense of spending thousands of dollars and the frustration of working with the wrong person, I wanted to share my viewpoints on finding the right health coach.

THE 5 FACTORS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT HEALTH COACH

1. Knowledge

Knowledge is listed first because even if a health coach is well-meaning and wants to help, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they know what to do to get to the root cause of your health issues. They may be more concerned with working on your symptoms, and although that may be helpful in the short term, you will not achieve the long-term results you desire. Working with a health coach who interprets at-home health testing will make a significant difference.

2. Experience

My second criterion is that even if someone has the book knowledge, they may not have the experience of working directly with hundreds of clients to customize individualized programs. Even the best wellness protocols will likely need consistent adjustments to make the plan work so that you successfully achieve your goals.

3. Accountability

Looking for a health coach to hold you accountable may seem strange at first; however, the majority do not achieve their desired results because they don’t stick with their plan long enough for their body to adapt. We do not recommend that clients only have one consultation with a practitioner and never check in again to assess progress. In my experience, the follow-up appointments enable you to make incremental, crucial adjustments to your plan to maximize overall effectiveness

4. Compassion

I met with many knowledgeable and experienced practitioners in the past who were rather cold and distant with me during each consultation. Although you may still get results with that type of practitioner, it is much more beneficial to work with someone who will empathize with your experiences and provide a more compassionate approach to help you feel supported and encouraged throughout your healing process.

5. Perseverance

Perseverance is the most critical factor once you have considered the previous four. Anyone facing challenging health issues must understand that there is always an answer, and they can get well, too. However, they must dig deep and stay the course throughout the process. They also need a health coach who will stick by them to realize that they are in this healing process together. This type of health coach is a rare find but is typically someone who has overcome their health issues and is committed to ensuring you achieve your goals.

Other factors may be of high importance to you as well; however, any health coach who embodies these five factors will be someone who will enable you to achieve your wellness, weight, or longevity goals.
